Following an open call to envisage and design a playable sculptural installation for the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Sculpture Garden, the shortlisted proposal reimagines play as a transformative gateway to other worlds, inspired by an exploration of storytelling, drawing, and making.
The design utilises simple, archetypal forms to create a landscape of playable spaces, objects, and figures. It extends the gallery’s interior into the garden and street, with the façade and boundary wall forming an outdoor ‘room’ connected by an existing path. Inside this space, plinths, walls, and frames represent expressions of play.
The proposal celebrates Dulwich Picture Gallery’s legacy by integrating play into its public realm, offering a new entrance, and engaging visitors with both art, as well as the surrounding context.
